Leadership Across Generations: Engaging Gen Z and Beyond
Nazneen Batliwala, the Sassy HR Lady at Bocconi
At SDA Bocconi, SassyHRLady brought together some of HR's sharpest voices for a candid conversation about what happens when five generations share the same workplace.

From Gen Z expectations and leadership styles to feedback, flexibility, reverse mentorship and the myths that keep generational stereotypes alive, this wasn't another conversation about "how to manage Gen Z." It was about a much bigger question: how do we build leaders who can earn the trust of every generation?

Moderating a panel featuring leaders from Hyundai Motor India, Mars, NielsenIQ, Multiplier Brand Solutions and Publicis Groupe,

Nazneen Batliwalla challenged the room to move beyond stereotypes and examine what organisations really need to do to build workplaces where different generations can thrive together.

From myth-busting and hiring the next generation to some deliberately uncomfortable debates around flexibility, accountability, loyalty, performance, potential and the role of HR, the conversation kept one thing at its centre: the future of work isn't about choosing one generation over another. It's about learning how to lead across all of them.

The Conversation Went Beyond Generational Stereotypes.

The panel explored:

  • How organisations can align different generations around a shared purpose

  • Why feedback and communication can't follow a one-size-fits-all approach

  • How early-career expectations can become a driver of workplace innovation

  • Whether reverse mentorship actually creates meaningful knowledge transfer

  • Whether organisations are over-indexing on one generation's preferences

  • What leadership needs to look like when the workforce spans five generations

And, because no SassyHRLady conversation is complete without a little friction, the panel tackled the questions leaders often avoid:

Who should adapt more - leaders or Gen Z?

Does flexibility create ownership or reduce accountability?

Is loyalty dead, or have organisations simply stopped earning it?

Performance or potential?

Has HR become too employee-centric and forgotten the business?

The Takeaway

Every generation enters the workplace shaped by different experiences, expectations and ideas of what a career should look like.

But the reasons people stay are surprisingly universal.

They want to be respected.
They want to be challenged.
They want room to grow.

And above all, they want leadership they can trust.

The future of work isn't about choosing between Gen Z, Millennials, Gen X or Boomers.

It's about building leaders who can bring out the best in every generation.
